Three Kandy players in Sri Lanka Sevens team

Three Kandy school players are in the Sri Lanka sevens rugby squad and the coach is also from Kandy. This squad will leave on 17th to contest in the Asia Rugby Men’s and Women’s Sevens tournament in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.This men’s and women’s tournaments will be held on the 19th and 20th. This event will act as Asian Qualifiers for the Rugby World Cups 7’ 2022 to be held in South Africa and as a ranking tournament for the Asian Games 2022 which will be held in Hangzhou – China next year. So this year it is going to be an interesting tournament with top eight Men’s and eight Women’s Sevens teams.

The three players are playing for Air Force, Army and Navy learnt their rugby in Kandy schools.They are Nuwan Perera, played for Kingswood College as full back is now with the Air Force side and gives his best in positions like scrum half and fly half. Nuwan is outstanding player, a decent counter attacker and has a great kicking game. He has a booming kick in his touch finders. Then the second player is a product of Sri Rahula College, Katugastota Sudhakara Dikumbura who played as a three quarter, now plays for Army, during his school days was a good ball handler and was the team’s strongest tackler and runner and was also good at passing and kicking as well. The third player is Kanchana Ramanayake who learnt his rugger at Trinity College is a three-quater with a good knowledge, he is a expert in running with the ball and was also a good ball-handler and decision-maker. So, these three Kandy school proudcts have made the city of Kandy proud.

Kandy’s Nilfer Ibrahim is one of the coaches,who is a well known figure in the playing and coaching fields played for Kingswood College, Kandy Sports Club, Navy and Sri Lanka asa scrum half and earned a good name as a player at school and club level. Nilfer has coached many clubs and schools like Kingswood, Trinity, Isipathana and in sevens he is good in coaching for many years. . This coach Nilfer has a tremendous affection for Sri Lanka rugby, he is all out to give his best for the team and the players in return should give their best and keep the Sri Lanka flag flying.
