As we move into the last couple of days looking forward to the international restart of rugby the Sri Lankan Tuskers Rugby 7’s squad both men and women move forward with a positive mindset to perform well with relatively young sides to do well under the captaincy of Adeesha Weeratunga (Men’s team) and Dulani Pallekondage (Women’s team) which will be coached by Ben Gollings and Nilfer Ibrahim (Men's) and Saliya Kumara (Women's).
SLR contacting Ben Gollings of England as the Director and Consultant is that he possesses the love and knowledge of the game of 7’s specially and still holds the record of being the highest 7’s try scorer. He has the desire and passion to share the knowledge of the game with the players which are the main ingredients. SLR has been constantly in touch with Ben during the lock downs and pandemic over virtual meetings and his presentations gave the confidence that he could help our players to develop to play to their maximum potential.
Speaking to the Daily News SLR president Rizly Illyas said “We are really thankful to our main sponsors Men’s team Moose Clothing (Hasib Omar- Executive Director) and Women’s team EFL (Saif Yousuf- Managing Director). Also Co-Sponsors Webxpay & true Colors in coming together with the sponsorship during the difficult times. Your generosity will not go unappreciated. SLR would like to say a huge thank you to their sponsors, as it is their generous donations that go such a long way in helping to empower young people to succeed through the values of rugby and to build a positive and supportive community”.
“SLR wanted to give a big thanks also to the Ministry of Sports, Sports Medicine Unit, Ministry of Health, Ramada Hotel, Mandarina Hotel, Dr. Sankalpana, SLR Council and SLR admin for putting together the team work in the path to this tournament”.
“Our sincere gratitude also to Ted Mutthaia President CR & FC for making the grounds available for the national women’s team and at all times when SLR wanted a ground booking for training. Havelock SC President Thusitha Peiris, Police SC, Air Force ground and Hiran from the Royal College was very helpful in assisting and providing the necessary facility for training under very trying times of the bio bubble concept a big thank you to all”.
“Finally not forgetting to thank all the print and electronic media institutions who have been a great support not only for rugby but for all sports without them stepping up to another level is a challenge as they have very good criticism which I take it as a challenge, concluded Illyaz.
