The first game of hockey was played in Kandy, in 1907 at the present Police grounds earlier known as Army Barracks, it was nearly 115 years ago, still Kandy doesn’t have a proper hockey ground for the game.
Kandy District Hockey Association are to make a request to the newly elected Sri Lanka Hockey Federation president requesting for a hockey ground in Kandy. Hockey was first played in Kandy 1907, sad to say Kandy doesn’t have a hockey ground to promote the game. All boys and girls schools are in the game and also thereare over 25 clubs in the game but no grounds to play.
It is high time KDHA has its ownAstro turf hockey pitch to cater the need of the sport in the area and bring back Kandy’s glory days. President of the KDHA and newly elected Vice president of the controlling body R. Maheswaran said at the last executive committee meeting held few days back. He would send in a request and discuss the matter with the Sri Lanka Hockey Federation president.
Kandy District Hockey Association members hope that the controlling body will approve the request for anAstrot urf pitch to be built here in Kandy. With a hostel for the players, administration block, and a small club house to have meetings. The hill capital of Kandy has yet to have such facility that wouldenable the hosting inter club men and women’stournaments and national level championships.Kandy have finalized their inter club XI and the 7-a-sideleague and knockout tournaments. And also hopingfor a 5-a-side hockey tournament.
KDHA have also plans to establish a hockey school of excellence, where they would be educated and taught hockey, with the help of coaches from Kandy. Municipal Council playgrounds helpst he game but all the grounds are pocket size, no matches can be played. When the Bogambara grounds was under the municipal Council they helped in a big way to play hockey, after this ground was taken over by the Sports Ministry in the late 1990s and the loss of this ground is badly felt. When the ground was under the Municipality the ground charge wasonly a few hundred rupees but today it is in thousands. There have been severalrequests from veteran hockey players and present school and club players for a hockey ground. According to news this time this will be done.
