The Peradeniya University Department of Physical Education has a history of promoting Sports through their grounds. This University, blessed with indoor and outdoor sports facilities in the good old days provided the fullest support for the development and promotion of sports in Kandy with their indoor and outdoor sports facilities, which includes Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rugby, Tennis, Volleyball courts, track for athletics. Other than these facilities outdoor courts are available for Softball Cricket, Baseball and Elle. These play grounds are situated in a very beautiful environment.
Sportsmen in Kandy used these facilities to get relaxation of body mind and to maintain a healthy life style. They have one of the largest gymnasiums . At the Gymnasium Indoor facilities are available for Badminton, Basketball, Carrom, Chess, Netball, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Bodybuilding, Wrestling and other activities. They also have a superb Swimming Pool.
In the good old days Peradeniya University gave a big hand for all sports, which helped schools and clubs in Kandy in a big way. This University possess unique sporting facilities. They have a Cinder Athletic Track is one of the best, this track is made of coal and has six lanes with an inner lane distance of 400 metres. This athletic field helped field events, including long jump and triple jump pit with runways, discus and putt shot rings. Football and Rugby Ground was used primarily for training and matches. This ground helped to play Inter Univesity football and rugby competitions, at one time they played in the “B and A” division inter club rugby and also the Bradby Shield games were played. Then in football, Kandy clubs played their matches and also FFSL FA Cup and Premier League matches as well as club tournaments were played.
The cricket ground, was a well maintained ground with turf and later a matting pitch was introduced. This wicket hosts Inter University matches,, and as well as school and club matches and even foreign teams too have played. Tennis court complex has three courts. These courts are clay surfaced and well maintained. This court helped university students, staff and outsiders as well. Then the out-door Volleyball Court is located next to the athletic track and have two clay based courts., where this sport was given a big hand.
These Outdoor basketball court is situated next to the volleyball courts and is a hard court made of tar, where university , schools and clubs played. The hockey pitch is also a top class venue and well maintained pitch, used for for training and matches. This ground hosted Inter University matches, as well as Kandy DHA Clubs and Kandy school matches.
