Hosein included in WI Squad

Akeal Hosein

West Indies have suffered a blow ahead of their T20 World Cup title defence with Fabian Allen getting ruled out of the tournament due to an ankle injury.

The T20 World Cup’s Event Technical Committee has approved left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein as the replacement player for Allen in the 15-member squad.

Allen was an integral part of the West Indies XI coming into the tournament having featured regularly in the home season against Australia and South Africa prior to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Hosein, who was named in the reserves, has now replaced the 26-year-old bowling all-rounder in the squad.

Hosein starred in the CPL this year where he formed a deadly combination with Sunil Narine for Trinbago Knight Riders. He ended up picking 13 wickets at a stunning economy rate of 4.92 in the competition.

He has played 15 times for West Indies in white-ball cricket with his most recent appearance coming in August this year against Pakistan in a T20I.

With the 28-year-old now moving into the main squad from the reserves, West Indies have named Gudakesh Motie as Hosein’s replacement in the reserves list.

Every team in the competition has travelled with extra players in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Motie, who represented Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL this year, is uncapped at the international level. (Agencies)
