Asif Ali cameo gets Pakistan home in Dubai

Babar Azam hit a top score of 51 for Pakistan

Asif Ali hoisted four sixes in the penultimate over as Pakistan defeated Afghanistan by five wickets in their ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup Super 12 match played in Dubai, United Arab Emirates yesterday.

Ali hammered Karim Janat for a maximum in the first, third, fifth and sixth deliveries of the 19th over as Pakistan chased down Afghanistan’s total of 147 with five wickets and one over to spare.

This was after Skipper Babar Azam had laid the foundation for their victory with a solid half-century inclusive of four boundaries.

Earlier, Afghanistan had an awful start to their innings as they collapsed to 64 for five at the halfway stage of the innings having elected to bat first.

The Pakistan seamers really stuck to their task with Shaheen Afridi and Imad Wasim providing the early breakthrough while Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan played a good supporting role.

However, Afghanistan were able to finish off their innings on a high note thanks to the efforts of Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib, who were associated in an unfinished seventh wicket stand of 71 runs.

Chief scores

Afghanistan: 147/6 in 20 overs (Najibullah Zadran 22, Mohammad Nabi 35 n.o, Gulbadin Naib 35 n.o, Imad Wasim 2/25)

Pakistan: 148/5 in 19 overs (Babar Azam 51, Fakhar Zaman 30, Asif Ali 25 n.o, Rashid Khan 2/26). (Agencies)
