Sampath Bandara in action-Kumudu Priyanka in action

Sri Lanka’s only Women’s athlete Kumudu Priyanka returned a personal best of 4.92m in the Women’s long jump T47 event but had to settle with the ninth place on Day 11 of the 16th Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan yesterday.

Despite her setback in this event, Priyanka successfully bettered her previous best of 4.89m at the 2021 World Para Athletic Grand Prix Meet, where she secured the Bronze Medal.

She returned a performance of 4.92m in the first attempt, 4.77m in the second attempt and 4.73m in her third attempt.

Therefore, on the basis of her first attempt performance Priyanka had to settle for the ninth place out of 12 competitors.

Anna Grimaldi of New Zealand won the Gold Medal in this event with a record breaking performance of 5.76m.

Alexandra Moguchaia (5.67m) representing the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Russia took the Silver Medal and Kiara Rodriguez (5.63m) of Ecuador won the Bronze Medal. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Maduranga Subasinghe finished fourth in the second heat of the Men’s 400m T47 event with a time of 51.01s and also missed out the chance of competing in the finals.

In addition, Sri Lanka’s Sampath Bandara was beaten 2-6 at the hands of Vivek Chikara of India in the Men’s archery individual recurve event.

Sri Lanka’s Palitha Bandara will come out for the first time when he competes in the Men’s shot-put F42 event today.
