Sri Lankan wrestler Chamara Milinda Perera missed out the opportunity of qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics when he failed to make it to the World Wrestling Qualifying Meet which was held from May 7 to 10 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Chamara was set to compete in the 65kg weight class category and two officials were also expected to take part at this meet. But due to the delay of their Visa’s they couldn’t make this tour.
A senior official of the National Wrestling Federation said the Sri Lanka Team had applied for their Visas through the Bulgaria Embassy in New Delhi, India.
“They had to spend Rs. 55,000 each for their Visas. The Visas were approved at the last moment and due to the COVID-19 pandemic they could not get their air tickets in time,” the official told the Daily News yesterday.
“We knew their Visas would be delayed due to the pandemic and now we are planning to participate at the last Olympic Qualification meet in Poland in June,” he added.
Chamara was placed fourth at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and is close to Olympic Qualification.”
