Thineera Akalanka will lead Wariyapola Sri Sumangala this year

Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College Kandy is a school which gives maximum support for sports, This year their cricket captain is fourth year coloursman Thineera Akalanka a fine all-rounder, who bats right hand, a steady off spinner and a good fielder in any position,His deputy is Priyantha Nelliga another fourth year player who is a good stumper, bats right hand and also a good right arm paceman Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College Kandy has produced some top cricketers. This school was formerly known as St. Paul’s College, and has a long history of over 140 years. It originated under the name of St. Paul’s College as a junior school of Trinity College Kandy. In the year 1991 on 2nd of March the name was changed to Wariyapola Sri Sumangala, College. According to history they were one of the first schools in Kandy to play cricket in 1894 and after a few years gave up the game. Then after 87 years in 1981 they restarted cricket due to the efforts of former Sri Lanka cricketer and Kandy Municipal Commissioner late D.H. de Silva who coached them. Sajith Fernando was one of DH’s products from St. Paul’s at junior level, who later crossed over to St. Anthony’s College. Then the other top cricketer to come out of this school is Prasanga Tennakoon who became the first cricketer of this school to score1000 runs . It was D. D. T. Alwis who groomed him as a top batsman. The other coaches who helped this school are Tudor Gunaratne, Ranjith Colombage and H.M.Rikas.

In 1988, Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College was the only team from Central Province to play in the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association Tournament and entered the quarter finals of the Portello Trophy, before losing to Sri Sumangala College, Panadura, who went on to become champions. Their Big match is against Sri Rahula College Katugastota,which is called “Kandy’s Battle of the Golds”

Kandy Wariyapola Sri Sumangala.despite having limited facilities and without much support are doing their best to keep the game of cricket alive.. They do not have a playground, This year they are being coached by Bandula Ranasinghe . He learnt his cricket at Vidyartha College and led the side in 1987 and later played club cricket and started coaching his old school in 1999 and continued till 2016 From September 2019 he has been handling the Sri Sumangala College side and given his best and this time too is sure to do a good job. This is a multi-sporting school where a variety of games are played, football, hockey, badminton, and rugger, . , .Students of this school love the gentleman’s game and it is the most cherished sport in the school.

This time they are in the under 19 Division III Level One Group “K” with schools like Polonnaruwa Royal College, Ibbagamuwa Central, Nugawela Central , Al-Azar College Akurana, and Wayamba Royal College. This year they are having a talented side, and posses a formidable batting line up with penetrative bowlers and good fielders and are determined to come out with a good performance..
