Due to the support of Central Province Cricket Association President Sarath Ekanayake and Secretary Janaka Pathirana, St. Sylvester’s College got a donation of Rs. one million an year ago to put up side turf wickets at their mini grounds at Asgiriya.
Work on the turf wicket commenced on May 30, 2020 and now it has come to an end and today at 10 .a.m. eight turf wickets will be opened and will be handed over to the school for the use of their cricketers.
A big hand should also go to the old boys like J.G. Thilakasri, U.S.K. Kodithuwakku, G.G. Hewamanne, R. Maheswaran and the principal P.G.S. Bandara for their good work, which is going to help the young up and coming cricketers in a big way, which they were lacking for years.
Today every schoolboy cricketer loves the great game of cricket and understands the importance of good cricket pitches.
This school which started cricket in late 1950’s, and were badly in need of turf wickets for their training.
For Sylverstains in the early days Police grounds were like their home venue and they played all their matches including the big match on this ground matting wicket.
Despite handicap their performances have been quite good. This school was formed in 1940 and in 1955 St. Sylvester's College made a modest beginning by introducing cricket and their first game was against Vidyartha College who are today their traditional Big Match rivals.
A big hand to the CPCA for the helping hand as they are doing their best to promote the game in Central Province.
The players who were familiar with the matting wicket have faced difficulties while playing on turf. Now with the new turf wickets, the players will get the required exposure to perform well.
Once again thanks to the CPCA for helping with professional cricket groundsman with technical inputs at a very low rate.
For players who were trained only in matting wicket, it would take some time to get used to the turf wickets.
