Methika Wickramasingha launched his campaign for the Boys’ Under-14 Single title with a convincing victory on the fourth day of the HNB-Hutch Clay Court Tennis Nationals, which continued at the SLTA Courts in Green Path yesterday.
Methika got off to a flying start as he took the opening set 6-0 and went on to complete another 6-0 rout in the second set over Elankovvan Ravinthiran in the first round encounter. Meanwhile, all favourites in the Boys’ Under-12 Singles event advanced to the second round while recording easy victories.
However, Adam Rahimdeen was stretched to a three-setter as he went through some anxious moments before overcoming Gahindu Kirinde 4-6, 7-6 (4), 11-9.

Boys’ Under-12 Singles first round: Dhamsath Peiris beat Dileep Goonasekara 6-0, 6-0. Vethum Kumarage beat Thevin Stable 6-3, 6-0. Kevan Abeyrathne beat Thenuk Nanayakkara 6-3, 6-4, Adam Rahimdeen beat Gahindu Kirinde 4-6, 7-6 (4), 11-9.
