Lanka Cavaliers beat Colombo Masters with four balls to spare in their second annual Masters 30 over cricket encounter, played at the Bloomfield ground, last Saturday.
Colombo Masters taking first lease, openers Palitha Liyanage and Damian Tisaaratchy made a grand opening stand of 117 runs in just 11 overs, with Palitha Liyanage cracking 65 runs ( 4×12) with his half century coming in 24 balls and Damian Tisaaratchy chipped with a patient 52 runs. Palitha Liyanage was the first to be dismissed and wickets falling at regular intervals slowed down the run rate with tight bowling by Veterans Johann Pieris, Manoj Perera, Krishan Dharmasena . Useful contributions from Thilan Wijesinghe, Sudharman de Silva, Pujitha Gunawardena and Lalith de Silva got them past the 200 mark plus.
Chasing the target, Lanka Cavaliers lost an early wicket in the first over, Veteran Johann Pieris joined opener Varuna Waragoda and the pair added a valuable 59 runs for the second wicket with the dismissal of Johann Pieris who scored 31 runs, joining Varuna Waragoda was Skipper Nalliah Devarajan who took up the challenge, steadied the innings with a fine display of batting added 97 runs for the third wicket and was finally dismissed with a personal knock of 34 runs and the score reading 3 wickets down for 156 runs. Varuna Waragoda played a heroic role ,scoring a well compiled 90 runs to bring his side much closer to the target. Manoj Perera ‘s quickfire knock of 14 runs not out got them to the winning target.
