Eight teams battle for supremacy

Eight teams from leading mercantile firms will compete in the annual “Mercantile Hockey Knockout Championship” to be held at the Astro Turf, Torrington on September 26 and October 3.

One of the popular events in the Mercantile hockey calendar will be the first tournament, after the outbreak of Covid-19 since March this year.

The eight teams are slated in two groups with Hattan National Bank are the reigning champions in the ‘A’ division category while Allianz Insurance Lanka Limited are the defending champions in the ‘B’ division, who apparently got promoted to the higher tier. Commercial Bank PLC will be the only firm to field two sides in this tournament in the respective divisions.

On the opening day (September 26), four matches are to be competed commencing from 7.30 a.m. followed the other three matches at 9 a.m., 2.00p.m and 3.30p.m.

On the second day, October 3, third place play off matches will be played in the morning while the knockout matches will be played in the evening including the grand final which is fixed to be played at 3.30 p.m.

This popular tournament which was inaugurated way back in 1953, the champions of the ‘A’ division will carry away the Hatna Trophy sponsored by Hatton National Bank while the ‘B’ division winners will receive the Mas Holdings Trophy sponsored by MAS holdings group.
