The finals of the Dialog President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation will be held on September 25 – 26 at the National Youth Services Centre Indoor Stadium, Maharagama. This is the main tournament for the Volleyball calendar and Dialog Axiata PLC is giving their maximum support to success this tournament for the 14th consecutive year as main sponsors.
According to the Senior official of the Volleyball Federation, this will be the first tournament conducted by the Volleyball Federation after the COVID-19 virus pandemic. This tournament was scheduled to be held last December but due to the clash (internal problems) between Wennappuwa and Ruwanwella teams and then the COVID–19 outbreak, the tournament was postponed without finalising the dates. The President’s Gold Cup serves as a base to identify fresh talent to the national junior and senior pools, who will undergo advanced training to represent the country.
The President Gold Cup is one of the most popular sports tourneys in Sri Lanka with participation from all provinces in the country. The tournament was started in August last year with a record participation of 2,500 teams and a total of 40,000 spikers. The intensity of the competition sets the stage to attract the best talent from the peripheries to compete and excel at national and international level. “The women’s final between Uswewa Ratanapala SC and Radawana Gold Bird SC will be played on September 26 at 1 pm while the men’s final between Gampaha Siyanetharu SC and Debegama Rantharu SC will be played after the women’s final. However, these matches will be conducted under the health guidelines,” said a Volleyball Federation official.
Rupavahni Eye channel will live telecast these finals as usual. During the lockdown period, all volleyball activities were held up and they also dissolved the National pool which was in training. The spikers are keen to contest this tournament which is going to be a tough battle especially the men’s final. Last time in 2018 Siyane Taru SC and Casual SC emerged men’s and women’s champions and this time Siayane Tharu SC hoping to win the men’s championship for the second consecutive time.
The Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa will be the chief guest at the awards ceremony which will commence soon after the men’s final while Volleyball Federation President and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Ranjith Siyabalapitiya and senor officials of Dialog Axiata also will grace this occasion. The winners, first and second runners up of the tournament in both the men’s and women’s category will receive trophies and cash prizes, whilst special awards will be presented to the best players of the tournament.
