Anika and Alana bag U-18 doubles tennis title

Favourites Anika Seneviratne and Alana Seneviratne ended their campaign in the Clay Court Tennis Nationals in style when they clinched the Girls’ Under-18 doubles title at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo.

The two sisters from Ladies’ College, playing with a great amount of understanding and coordination brought down the combination of Oneli Perera and Sethmi Sumanaweera in straight sets 6-2, 6-0.

This victory also enabled Anika to complete a fine double in the tournament having earlier retained the more important Women’s Singles crown for the third successive year.

For Alana also it was a huge satisfaction as she eventually made a point following her earlier exit from the quarter finals of the Girls’ Under-18 Singles.

Meanwhile, the pair of Binudi Wijayawardane and Senulya Wijayawardane put up a stunning performance to claim the Girls’ Under-14 doubles title. The fourth seed combination from Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo rallied around magnificently and defeated the bottom seeds Nesangi Hemakumara and Ruvi Lewkebandara in a thrilling final encounter.

In fact, Binudi and Senulya conceded the opening set to their opponents 4-6 but staged a superb fightback to snatch the second set 6-2 and the decisive third set 10-7 following a tie-breaker.
