Chandrika completes coaching course in Hungary

Chandrika de Silva, the former National Badminton champion, successfully followed the International coaching course conducted by the University of Physical Education in Budapest Hungary. Chandrika is the only Sri Lankan who followed this three-month course which started in March.

Chandrika, an experienced women’s shuttler who is still playing badminton, followed this course and received a general average of ‘excellent’. She was very active during this course to obtain the highest pass excellent. General Conditioning, Sport Pedagogy, Sport Physiology, Sport Psychology, Sport Sociology, Sports Injuries, and Training theory were included for the General Subjects while she also did sport specialisation (Theory and Methodology for coaching which includes Theory, Practice and study report) to complete the course.

In addition, the important lectures given by professional lectures were with regard to sports nutrition, Sport Management, legal basics of sports, Research methods, Olympic moments and success, Human Biology and Legacy of Sports Education in Hungary. Chandrika is hoping to be a successful coach in Sri Lanka.

The dedicated shuttler from Anuradhapura came to Colombo with a very good sports background. She also played cricket gave up cricket to concentrate on badminton. She is employed at Seylan Bank and also plays for the bank in the Mercantile Badminton tournament.

Chandrika sets records in her badminton career. She was the Sri Lanka National champion from 1997 to 2003 and regained the title in 2005. In 2004, she won one silver and three bronze medals at the 2004 South Asian Games. At the 2005 Nepal Satellite Tournament, she clinched the women’s singles and mixed doubles event and in the same year, she reached the women’s doubles quarter-finals at the Asian Championships. She also won the women’s and mixed doubles titles in Syria and Jordan.
