Boxing coaches educated on dangers of drug abuse

Boxing coaches were educated on the health hazards of doping and safety aspects of boxing during a seminar held at the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) at Sugathadasa Stadium on Monday.

Organized by the Boxing Coaches Association of Sri Lanka (BCASL), it was conducted by SLADA Director General Dr. Seevali Jayawickreme and Dr. E.W. Jayasinghe. Former national coach and AIBA instructor Capt. R.K. Indrasena gave a demonstration of the new hand wrapping system.

Nearly 50 coaches attended the seminar and certificates will be awarded after holding an exam on another day, said BCASL president Upali Bandara. Dr. Jayawickreme spoke extensively on the ill effects of performance enhancing drugs, how it is tackled by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of which SLADA is a signatory, the list of prohibited substances which are

reviewed annually and published on October 1st each year, about Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE), common cases of drug abuse, and health hazards.

Speaking on supplements, he explained the energy sources and role of protein especially whey protein needed for athletes to recover from injuries.

Surgeon Rear Admiral (Retd) Jayasinghe of Navy spoke on why safety measures are taken in amateur boxing in order to prevent severe injuries, about common boxing injuries, how to stop nose bleeding and signs of concussion.

Safety and care of the boxer is the utmost priority of ringside doctors, he stressed.
