Former captain Fazil Marija who played a big hand in Kandy Sports Club winning the league last season will continue the good work he did with Sean Wijesinghe in coaching. Sean was the head and Fazil was the assistant coach last season. Now Sean has gone to Canada, Fazil is sure to give a good account of himself as a coach. All Kandy fans are happy that Marija has been entrusted with the coaching. He was one of the country's and Asia’s finest fly half. He sported the Sri Lanka jersey for 14 long years. A product of Kingswood College, he played in all age groups.

Kandy District Hockey Association had their first committee meeting on Sunday after the AGM. At the meeting, it was decided to bring back the game to its former glory and also give a helping hand for schools hockey and the coaches. They are keen to come out with their tournaments, but the main problem is the unavailability of grounds for matches.

Mayor Kessara to help sports
Sports-loving Mayor of Kandy Kessara Senanayake is keen to introduce sports academies for Cricket, Football Rugger, Volleyball, Netball, Carrom, and Hockey. If it materializes it will be a great benefit for the needy sportsmen and women in Kandy. Today academies charge a high rate, where only those who can afford can attend. The Municipal Council has some of the top coaches and they can help in this much looked forward to promotion. In the early days, it was the KMC playgrounds which helped sportsmen to do well and also to represent the country.
When will the 2019 AGM of KFL take place?
Today no one seems to care for Kandy’s football which has a record of being in existence for over 90 years. For the last many years, tournaments are not organized. Why is the FFSL blind to this? Today the game of football is given step-motherly treatment because the right people are not involved. The Kandy Football League is a founder member of the controlling body. At one time this league conducted over 150 matches a year, today not even ten. The (FFSL) recently announced a 31-player pool for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023 Preliminary Joint Qualification Round 1 against Macau. No one in the pool are from Kandy clubs.
Manchester Football Academy tournament postponed
Kandy’s Manchester Football academy is under the wing of S. A. Weerasinghe, former, Sunrise F&AC, Army, Kandy and Sri Lanka player and a well-experienced coach. Under his guidance a football tournament was to be held for Travel Academy from Gampola, Travel Academy Nawalpitiya, Paragapiitiya Academy and Katugastota Zahira Academy, where six teams each from under 9, 12 and 16 groups were to take part on May 18 and 19 at the Edmund Silva playgrounds Deyanawella. However, the tournament had to be called off due to the present situation in the country. It will be held on a later date.
Kavindu back in the hills
Kavindu Perera, who led CR & FC, is expected to don the Kandy SC jersey next season. Kavindu, a product of Vidyartha College was guided by the famous coach Anil Jayasinghe and plays as a wing-three-quarter.
Kandy’s rugby lovers happy
Kandy’s rugby lovers are happy with the news that the schools 2nd Round Rugby League 2019 is set to kick off from May 31. Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association has got the green light to recommence the matches at neutral venues, after thorough security checks, clearances and several consultations. Kandy‘s matches Cup, Plate, and Bowl are to be played at Bogambara Stadium. Trinity’s is the only Cup team and in the Plate there is St. Anthony’s, Vidyartha, Kingswood, Dharmaraja, St. Sylvester’s and Sri Sumangala.
Rugby referees seminar and workshop
A preparatory seminar and workshop will take place for referees and assistant referees of Central Province on Saturday (May 25), most probably at Nittawela grounds. This seminar will be conducted by experienced referee Anil Jayasinghe focusing on fair play, protecting players and the image of the game, as well as consistency and uniformity. This will help the match officials in a big way for the second round schools rugby games.
KDHA to come out with an academy, indoor hockey
Kandy District Hockey Association headed by R. Maheswaran is to start a hockey academy to help the up and coming players and also to introduce indoor hockey. The academy will be for Sub Junior (under 12), Junior (Under 15) and Senior (Under 17) two sessions monthly of practice on turf. The main idea is to develop to sustain the passion for hockey by introducing the game to pre and early teenaged children and simultaneously promoting playing sport as a culture and tradition, thereby contributing to the development of a sports-loving society.
Simithrarachchi Cup game on June 1
Royal and Trinity U18 Junior teams will lock horns one and half hours before the first leg of the Bradby at Pallekelle for the Simithrarachchi Cup.
This match is played annually since the 1960’s before the Bradby. Last year in the first leg Royal won 14-8. The two schools have been playing their junior game for many years, but only in 1978, the C.E. Simithrarachchi Cup was introduced. It was donated by old Trinitian George Hemachandra.
