Now Clifford Cup rugby: Kandy v Air Force on March 16

The league rugby season for the year is over, with Kandy Sports Club winning it for the 20th time in 25 years. Now it’s time for the Clifford Cup knockout rugby. All eight clubs will be seen in action. The first game is between defending champions Kandy Sports Club the league winners who will play last placed Air Force SC on March 16 at Pallekelle. If Kandy wins the semi-final will be on March 19 or 20. The final is scheduled for March 24. If Kandy qualifies all their matches will be played at Pallekelle. The other games are: Havelock SC vs. Navy SC, CH FC vs Army SC and CR & FC vs Police SC. In last year’s final Kandy SC beat Navy SC 21-7 at Longden Place. All Kandy matches will be played at the Trinity College grounds at Palekelle.

Harris Omar CIC post at Sri Lanka Rugby

Harris Omar former Trinity College, Kandy SC and Sri Lanka player, who had the privilege to lead all three teams, has been invited by Sri Lanka Rugby to take up the Continuous Improvement Consultant post. His first assignment will be for the event to be held in Taipei. Harris Omar, like his father Iswan Omar, played for Trinity College as a scrum-half and later became a third row forward. Kandy SC in their 125th year won the Rugby Sevens title in 1999 under Harris Omar and also the league and the knockouts to become triple champions. Harris played for Sri Lanka from 1996 to 2002. Both father and son played for Trinity and won the conveted Lion and led Kandy SC.

Battle of the Maroons: Rajans v Kingswood on March 15-16

Kingswoodians and Rajans old and present are set for the 113th Battle of the Maroons of Kandy to be played for the T.B.Tennekoon Memorial Trophy on 23 and 24 March at Pallekele. This is the oldest big match in the historic city of Kandy.

MYSB Piyasena new MIC rugby at Rahula

Sri Rahula College Katugastota got a new MIC for cricket M.Y.S.B. Piyasena, a product of Matugama Central where he excelled in athletics and volleyball. He is Diploma holder in sports.

Trinity vs Isipatana on Sunday

Trinity College who won their first game, will be rearing to exhibit their inherent rugby skills and assert their supremacy in no uncertain terms when they host Isipatana College at Pallekele on Sunday with kick off at 4 pm. Trinity will have to tighten up their loose ends if they hope to win this game. Isipatana who beat St. Anthony’s last week will be fielding a good side and should be at full strength to hold the Trinitians in their home den. Whenever these two schools met they presented good quality rugby. It will be interesting to see how both sides that are good in open rugby, dish out in this game.

Kingswood vs St. Peter’s at Nittawela today

Kingswood College who were made to fight hard to earn their victory in the first game of the season against Wesley College will go all-out to give a good impression against St. Peter’s College today at Nittawela. Kingswood go into the game with a slight home ground edge but will not have things as rosy as they think. Peterites though they lost their first game closely have a good talented side, and should do well.

Vidyartha vs St. Sylvester’s on Sunday at Nittawela

Vidyartha College who smashed Mahanama College by 60 points to 15 at Pallekele will go all out to repeat the same performance on Sunday when they scrum down at Nittawela against St. Sylvester’s. Vidyartha in their first game against Mahanama College got into business from the kick off and dominated the forward and back division play. More importantly they were quite outstanding in the loose play and combined well in the rucks and mauls and are all-out to give a good run to St Sylvester’s who usually play good rugby but did not live up to their reputation in their first game of the season against Dharmaraja.

Trinity-Anthony’s one-day on March 16

The much-awaited one day cricket encounter between Trinity College and St. Anthony’s College, the 39th edition of the series played for the Sir Richard Aluwihare trophy will take place at Asgiriya Stadium on March 16 Saturday. Out of the 38 games played so far Trinity has 18 wins, St. Anthony’s 17 with 1 tied and 2 no-results. Last year Trinity College won.

Sri Rahula vs St. Anne’s on Sunday

Sri Rahula College who beat St. John’s College in their opening game will be in Kurunegala on Sunday to play St. Anne’s College in their inter school division rugby game. A full strength Sri Rahula XV will take the field with high hopes. St. Anne’s at their home ground are sure to give a good fight.

Trinity U17 Basketball team qualifies for A Division

The Trinity College under 17 Basketballers have been selected to play in the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation U17 “A” division championships after the qualifiers which took place on 1 March. The team emerged group runners-up, losing only to Ananda College. A big hand should go to S. Pingamage their head coach.

Seethadevi hockey

The annual seven a side hockey tournament organized by the Seethadevi old girls hockey club was held on February 23 and 24 at the Campus grounds Peradeniya. This is one of the most looked forward hockey events in the hills. In the “A” division men’s Army beat Air Force 1-0 on penalty shootout and emerged champions. The Women’s final too ended in a penalty shootout affair where Air Force beat Navy by 3-2. In the “B division, Defenders beat Eagles 1-0 on penalty shootout. In the under 16B boys Trinity College beat Kingswood College 1-0 on penalty shootout, In the girls Seethadevi beat Swarnamali 1-0 also on penalty shootout.

Agbo Amarasinghe best batsman

Dynamic Trinity College “A” team batsman Agbo Amarasinghe who has a unique style of batting was awarded the best batsman’s and man of the match award at the annual Trinity – Antonian mini battle. He made a solid 108.

Vidyartha-Sylvester’s one day on March 24

The 32nd limited over cricket match between Vidyartha College and St.Sylvester’s College is expected to take place on March 24 Sunday at the Asgiriya Cricket Stadium. Last year St. Sylvester’s won by 6 wickets.

Carter Reds and Boarding House champs

The Carter Reds and Boarding House emerged as joint champions of the Trinity College, Junior School Inter House Athletics Meet held at the Asgiriya Stadium. The meet as held under the patronage of 1996 Trinity athletics captain Dr. U.R. Attygalle. The under 8 championship was pocketed by M.M. Abeywansha, Under 9 was won by K.J.D.Y.T. Jayasuriya both of Carter Red House and the under 10 championship was won by A.G. Punchihewa of Boarding House.

BJ de Selfa softball cricket

The Mahiyawa community are planning to have a softball cricket tournament for a trophy in the name of B.J. de Selfa, a product of Mahiyawa and an old boy of St. Sylvester’s College, and one time playground officer of the Municipal Council who excelled in athletics in the Kandy District during the 1960’s. It will be a six a side tournament among players from Mahiyawa.
