Kandy could find CR tough to beat

CR & FC XV fresh from their 23-20 victory over Navy SC last Saturday will host Kandy SC who went down to CH & FC last week to make it two losses for the season. A rousing game is on the cards when these two teams clash in their return game at Longden Place. In the first round game played at Nittawela Kandy SC scored a thrilling win. So, what will be today’s result? The side that moves the ball down their line should get the better in the game. Kandy’s assets will be their mobile pack which is about the best equipped with some top players and they will have to rely more on their speedy outsides. CR& FC will be fielding their best outfit, and they will go all out to play a game like they did last week. They are full of enthusiasm and determination to record a win over the white shirts. Kandy SC who are licking their wounds inflicted on them by Army SC and CH & FC will need to win both their remaining matches to maintain their number one position.

Trinity gets All Blacks player as consultant

Rodney So'oialo (born 3 October 1979 in Moto'otua, Samoa) who was New Zealand’s No. 8 rugby player and has also played in Japan for the Honda Heat has been invited as consultant for Trinity College rugby team. He was a member of the coaching team for Tawa Rugby Club, in his home city of Wellington. Previously, he had been a stalwart for the Hurricanes in the Super Rugby competition, making 101 appearances for the franchise. He also made 62 test appearances for the All Blacks between 2002 and 2009.

St. Sylvester’s U14 hockey champs

Viduka Gamage led St. Sylvester’s to win the under 14 hockey tournament played at Randle hills grounds where 15 schools took part in five groups. The Sylvestrians beat Bandaranayake College Kundasale (9-1), Vision International School (11-1) in the group stage and in the semifinal beat Kingwood College (2-0) and in the final they beat Dharmaraja College (2-1). The best goal keeper and the highest goal scorers were also from the champion team Praveen Madavan and Kaushik Gunasekara respectively. The organizing of the tournament left much to be desired.

Schools lack good sports masters

Kandy schools in the sporting field lack good people, who can handle sports. Some of them don’t know the fixtures even the names of the players. In the good old days, the people who were in charge were sportsmen who knew what sports was and how it should be handled.

School principals should attract sports-minded people to work in sport communications, team management and more. As any sportsman knows full well, disciplined, high-quality training provides the essential foundation for success. To succeed in sport management, you need good knowledgeable people.

Hettiarachchi makes Kandy proud

H.A.A.P. Hettiarachchi of Vihara Mahadevi BV is the only athlete from Kandy who is among the 12 athletes selected for the Asian Youth athletics pool that has been picked for the 3rd Asian Youth Athletics championship to be held in mid-March in Hong Kong. Six boys and six girls comprise the pool.

Bimandi of Hillwood is best girl’s player

Bimandi Bandara of Hillwood Girls College won the best girls players’ award at the Kanka Heath Challenge trophy Table Tennis tournament, which was organized by the TS Table Tennis Academy in collaboration with Kegalle District TT association. Young Bimandi gave an excellent display of TT, which was very much appreciated by the large crowd who turned up.

Kandy Bash

Kandy Bash 2019 associated by past pupils of St. Anthony's College, St. Anthony's Convent, Dharmaraja College, Girls High School, Good Shepherd Convent, Hillwood College, Kingswood College, Mahamaya Girls College, Pushpadana Girls College, Sri Sumangala College, St. Sylvester's College, Trinity College and Vidyartha College will be at Havelock Park on Saturday 6 April from 3 pm. The program starts with the walk from Havelock SC entrance through BRC, Colts CC and Isipatana Mawatha and back to Havelock SC. The first event will be the Avurudu Games followed by a Musical Show and Carnival. A Kiddies Play area with bouncers will also be available. The electronic media sponsor is Hiru TV and Hiru FM.

Bandula Warnapura trophy for Nalanda

The Bandula Warnapura trophy went to Nalanda College as they gained a first innings lead of 12 runs in their annual match against Dharmaraja College played at Lake View. This annual match named after Sri Lanka’s first Test captain was introduced in 2001. Scores: Dharmaraja 171 (60.5) and 198 for 8 (79); Nalanda 183 (54.4).

Dharmaraja-Ananda play for P.W. Perera trophy

Today is the second day of the under 19 traditional cricket match between Dharmaraja and Ananda played for the P.W. Perera Trophy at Lake View. The first recorded match between the two schools took place in 1893, where the Dharmaraja team was led by Sir D.B. Jayatilake who was the Principal of Dharmaraja at the time. The trophy was introduced in 1999 by the Cricket wing of Ananda College Old Boys’ Association as a tribute to P.W Perera who gave a big hand for the development of cricket both at Dharmaraja and Ananda.

Road Race

The annual road race of Trinity College, which is a part of the inter house sports meet took place on January 25. It was a well organized event. The first place went to N. M. Divyan – Simithraaratchy House - 15:29:19, second place S. C. Gunawardena – CB House - 16:07:44 and third place to N. A. Perera - Oorloff House - 17:25:35. Ten houses took part. The start and finish was opposite the school chapel.

St. Sylvester’s will be led by Dilanka

St. Sylvester’s College rugby team is coached by Sri Lankan player Roshan Weeraratne who has done his best with limited facilities. The side will be led by Dilanka Iroshana. The first game is with Dharmaraja College on 3 March.

Amesh to lead Sri Sumangala

Amesh Jayasinghe has been picked to lead Sri Sumangala College in the upcoming rugby season. They will be playing Ananda College in the first game at Pallekelle. The side is coached by D.M. Dharmapala for the third year.

Four wins for TCK at cricket

Trinity College has won four games and drawn eight games in the ongoing school cricket season. Today is the second day of their match with Ananda College. They have to play St. Peter's, St. Benedict's, S. Thomas’ and Royal before their big match with St. Anthony’s. Overall they have 15 games including eight tournament matches. They have beaten schools like St. Anthony’s Wattala, St. Anne’s, Nalanda, and Wesley. They have a highly qualified coaching team led by Kavinda Jayasuriya and assisted by Lahiru Seneviratne. D.D. Kulatunga is the MIC and Shane de Silva POG. Their pupils enjoy top class cricket facilities, indoor net area, outdoor grass and nets.

G.G. Oorloff House champions

The annual inter-house sports meet of Trinity College took place on Thursday January 31st at their grounds at Asgiriya. The house that emerged champions was Oorloff House. CBH was second, Simithraaratchy third, Garret fourth and Laumel fifth. In the junior event Pilcher finished first, Shayam second, Gibson third, Saunders fourth and Squealery fifth.

Antonians win Murali-Vaas trophy

St. Anthony’s College Katugastota’s performance at cricket this season is good. They have five first innings wins and six outright wins, and one no-decision under the guidance of former Thurstan College and Panadura SC cricketer Suneth Gunatillake. They are leading the table and have qualified for the quarters.

Antonian U13 reaches final after 21 years

St. Anthony’s ’ College Katugastota entered the final of the Under 13 Division I inter-school cricket final beating Prince of Wales College Moratuwa at Bandaranayke Central College grounds at Veyangoda. Prince of Wales made 112 for 9 and St. Anthony’s scored 60 for 2, and were awarded 2.60 points while the loser’s got 1.89 points. In the finals they will play Royal College. It was in 1995 under the coaching of Sylvestrian Ranjith Colombage they became 1995 champions. They were joint champions in 1996, 1997 and 1998.

Warm-up games

Two warm up games were played before the inter school rugby season. On Thursday January 7 at Pallekele between Trinity and Vidartha which went in favour of Vidyarta 12-10 and the Trinity-Dharmaraja game ended in a 7-all draw.

‘Kandy Faa’ is missed badly

Kandy’s rugby fraternity is mourning the death of their ardent rugby supporter A.M. ‘Kandy Faa’ Farook who died suddenly during an umra pilgrimage in Madena.

Tributes had been pouring in for Kandy Faa who was a hugely respected character and a lifelong friend to many of us. Prior to the Kandy SC vs CH & FC rugby game last Saturday, there was minutes silence held on behalf of Farook. Kandy suffered their first loss after his death when CH beat them.
