Jayasinghe (5/37) puts Thurstan in strong position

Thurstan paceman Bavantha Jayasinghe in a jubilant mood after capturing the wicket of Isipathana’s top scorer Thevindu Dickwella for 40 on the first day of the 56th Battle of Brothers at the SSCs grounds Pictures by Shan Rambukwella

A fine bowling spell by right arm medium pacer Bavantha Jayasinghe who claimed 5 wickets for 37 helped to put Thurstan in a strong position at the end of first day’s play in the 56th ‘Battle of the Brothers’ big match against Isipathana College played at Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) grounds yesterday.

Thurstan who won the toss and invited Isipathana to take first lease of the wicket were bundled out for 169 in 57.1 overs. Jayasinghe who took two wickets in the 57th over was well supported by skipper and left-arm spinner Sandaru Dias (4 for 4) to contain the Isipathana batsmen with only Tharindu Dickwella 40 and Savindu Uthsara 30 being the only ones to offer any resistance.

Thurstan in reply made 154 for 5 wickets at the close helped by a fifth wicket stand of 58 between Anju Karunanayake (70) and Ranesh Silva (28 not out).

Karunanayake had eight hits to the ropes and faced 80 deliveries while Ranesh had three boundaries in his unbeaten knock.

Dinath Dissanayake (2 for 32) was the pick of the Isipathana bowlers.

Thurstan will hope to go for quick runs today to get a substantial lead and to force a decision in their favour as they have not won the big match for the last 27 years having done so under Mackenzie Perera in 1992.
