SLC Presidency election will be held after discussions with ICC

Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Sumathi Dharmawardana appearing on behalf of the Attorney General and Sports,Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister Faizer Mustapha yesterday informed the Court of Appeal that arrangements will be made to hold the election for the Presidency of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) after discussions with International Cricket Council(ICC).

He told court that an Independent Election Committee will be appointed after amending the regulations of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). The Minister gave assurance that two retired judges and a representative of Elections Committee will also be included to the election committee.

The Minister made the submission when the petition filed by former cricketer Nishantha Ranatunga seeking an injunction order to prevent the incumbent SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala from contesting the election for the SLC presidency,was taken up before the Court of Appeal yesterday.

The Bench comprises Court of Appeal President Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Arjun Obeysekere. The case was fixed for November 30.

The respondents were ordered to file objections in court on Octomber 5.The petitioner was also ordered to file counter objection on October 26.

The petitioner has cited 27 persons including Minister Faizer Mustapha, SLC incumbent president Thilanga Sumathipala as respondents. Senior Councl Sugath Caldera and Romesh Silva PC appeared for the petitioner while Senior Counsel Navin Marapona appeared for the respondent Thilanga Sumathipala.
