Mandinu, a shuttling star in the making

Mandinu De Silva, residing in Vancouver, British Columbia is an upcoming badminton star. The Sri Lankan born youngster migrated to Canada with his parents when he was 8 years old.

Soon after he was caught the eye of the former Canadian national coach Ram Nayyar and he invited Mandinu to join his training academy, the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club. Since then, Mandinu has

been training with Ram and his father, Thushan De Silva a former Sri Lankan national shuttler.

He has been playing without much success in his early years but with his hard work and determination he went on to win many individual and team championship events including the Western Canadian Team Championship in 2017.

He became the under 17 BC Provincial Champion in both singles and doubles in 2017 and won the Silver medal in the mixed doubles event.

The 16-year-old is now playing in the under 19 age category. As a first-year player in under 19, Mandinu performed well in first two tournaments in the season.

He is currently ranked as #1 in under 19 age category for boys singles in British Columbia and #21 in Canada.

Mandinu's achievements in 2017

* VLTBC Junior Open – singles champion

* Hollyburn Junior Open – singles champion, doubles runner-up

* Remembrance Day Junior Open – singles runner-up, doubles runner-up

* B.C. Provincial Championships – singles champion, doubles champion, mixed doubles runner-up

He also participated in Saskatchewan Elite Series and Elberta Elite Series
