Sri Lankan National Chess Champion Raninidu Liyanage and FIDE Master Sasith Piyumantha of Dharmasoka College had to be satisfied with 23rd and 29th ranking slots at the Joytu Sheikh Hasina International Chess tournament which was organized by the Bangladesh Chess Federation last week.
Earlier most of the local chess players had to compete in online chess tournaments due to the Global pandemic but Liyanage and Piyumantha had a chance to take part in this tournament after a long time. Luxman Wijesuriya the President of the CFSLsaid the two Sri Lankan players’ performances cannot be underestimated as most of the top ranking players participated in this tournament and average results of both Liyanage and Piyumantha always showed much needed exposure for them. Liyanage has scored 5 points out of 9 games while Piyumantha has scored 4.5 points out of 9 games. Both Sri Lankans had to play against strong opponents during this event . Ranindu Liyanage was able to draw with Iranian Grandmaster Eshan Magami who finished 15th rank and was successful to win against three FIDE Masters from Bangladesh Nazir Ahmed, Nayem Haque and Subrota Biswas and Pakistani IM Mahmud Lodhi. Meanwhile Sasith Piyumantha also made good tournament by defeating Choudhry Marsouqe, Swarnavo Choudhry, Sakline Mustafa and Sarrif Hussain(2118) all from Bangladesh and drew with Indian IM Kostav Chattergee. International Master Sankalp Guptha of India won the championship to take number one rank and has scored 7 points out of 9 games. Indian players dominated the event and also came in first four places with highest points. The seven Indians were among the first ten ranking list.
International Master Mitabha Guha, International Master Aronyak Goush and International Master Das Sayantan having 6 .5 points each were placed 2nd, 3 rd and 4th respectively.
A total of 67 players from Bangladesh, Belgium, Czech Republic, India, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Ukraine entered to take part in this event.
Nine Grandmasters and 14 International Masters were among them and made tough competition to this event where the total prize money was US Dollars 15,000/=.
