Kolkata beat Rajasthan to move closer to IPL playoffs

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) all but confirmed their place in the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs with a one-sided 86-run win over Rajasthan Royals in Sharjah on Thursday.

In the final group stage game for both teams, Shubman Gill (56 off 44) top scored as KKR posted 171 for four.

Royals managed a dismal 85 all out in reply with Shivam Mavi taking four for 21.

Royals end the season in seventh place and their wait for a second IPL trophy - having won the inaugural competition in 2008 - goes on.

In arguably their most important game of the season, KKR made a cautious start to their innings, reaching 20 for no loss after four overs, 34 for no loss after the powerplay and 50 for no loss after eight overs.

Chief scores

Kolkata Knight Riders: 171/4 in 20 overs (Gill 56, Iyer 38)

Rajasthan Royals: 85 in 16.1 overs (Tewatia 44, Mavi 4/21, Ferguson 3/18). (BBC)
