Udara Chethani a promising women’s cricketer

Udara Chethani Bandara is an old girl of Mahamaya Girls School,Kandy and she is one of the finest cricketers produced by Mahamaya who is a left hand batswoman and a right arm medium pace bowler. Udara started her cricket career in the year 2011 and represented the school at the Kandy District Cricket Tournament and showed her skills in the game scoring 25 runs against St.Anthony’s Girls’ School when she was only 12 years old.

Her Cricket coaches were Amila Pinnaduwa and Upananda Jayasundera. Mahamaya Girls School has produced so many outstanding cricketers like Shalika Gannoruwa, Hasangi Tennakoon, Madhushika Muhandiram, Manjula Kalpage, Thushara Tennakoon, Udeshika Madumali and Yasamali Saparamadu to name a few.

In the year 2012 Udara showed some improvement in Bowling too and she claimed three wickets for 30 runs against Wattegama Maha Vidyalaya. In the following year she started playing Hard Ball Cricket and she took a hat-trick claiming 4 wickets in 4 balls against Nugawela Central School at the All island hard Ball Cricket tournament conducted by the Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket Association In 2014 she became the Best Player at the Kandy District Soft Ball Tournament and at this particular Tournament she was selected as the Best All-rounder by

claiming 6 wickets for 45 Runs.

In 2015 and 2016 she captained the school cricket team and they became the runners-up at the Kandy District Cricket tournament. In 2017 she was selected to the Development Squad of Sri lanka Cricket and she is in the cricket squad to date. In 2019 at the Singer Cricket Tournament she showed her class as a Batswoman and scored 66 against Dehiattakandiya National School.

In the year 2020 she represented Kandy at the Super Provincial Tournament in which the cricket teams from Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Colombo participated. She became the Best Bowler of the Kandy team claiming 19 wickets at the Tournament.

Udara’s intention is to play cricket for the Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket team as long as she is fit to do so. She is thankful to her father I.H.G.Bandara for the encouragement given to her to continue playing cricket without neglecting her studies.
