
Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) will mainly focus on the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games and the Asian Games in 2022, according to Major General Palitha Fernando, President of SLA.
“We have a good plan to prepare for these two major events and already SLA has formed the new Elite Pool and the new National Pool, which was chosen following the National Championships,” he stressed.
“The Sports Ministry and the Sports Development Department have provided all facilities including nutrition and accommodation for these too pools and now the athletes’ responsibilities are to develop their skills.”
“There are 21 athletes (10 Men and 11 Women) training with the Elite Pool while 20 athletes (14 Men and six Women) are training in the National Pool,” he elaborated.
“We are planning to conduct the selection trials from April 8 to 10 while the 99th National Athletics Championship is scheduled to be held from May 20 to 23.
“The April trials will be an opportunity for athletes to be selected for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games by achieving direct qualification standards, or by increasing their present World Ranking positions with a good performance,” he explained.
Meanwhile, marathon runner Hiruni Wijayaratne, who is based in USA is also preparing for the Olympics while sprinter Yupun Abeykoon, who is based in Italy is in good form having set up a National and South Asian 100m record.
