
Sansala Wanigasekera, the present Cricket Captain of Nugawela National School is a student of the School from the Grade I class. She started playing Cricket at the age of 10 years in the year 2012 under the coaching of Lalith Chandrasena, a former cricketer of St.Andrews College, Gampola and a senior cricket coach and a cricket umpire. She did not get a chance to perform well till the year 2015 and in that year she was involved in serious cricket in school and she scored a match winning 78 runs against Pindeniya Central School at the cricket tournament organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.
In the year 2016 Sansala performed well as a wicket keeper claiming 25 victims behind the stumps. In 2017 she was selected to the provincial cricket team under the captaincy of Shiny Senaratne at the Kandy District Women’s cricket tournament held among the Kandy,Dambulla and Galle Women’s Cricket teams and in these cricket matches she took 10 catches and five stumpings as a wicket keeper. In the school cricket team she was under the captaincy of Madara Samarakoon and the team came upto the quarter final stage playing in the Sri Lanka womens cricket tournament. In the year 2019 she claimed three catches behind the stumps and scored an unbeaten knock-of 50 runs representing Mahamaya CC playing against Palinks Cricket School, in the year 2019 .
Sansala is leading the cricket team of Nugawela National School in 2021 and scored 30 runs in the first match of this season against St.Anthony’s Girls School,Katugastota. Sansala’s main intention is to continue studies as well as play cricket until she is selected to the national cricket team as wicket keeper – batswoman.
Sansala is thankful to her coach Lalith Chandrasena for the continuous encouragement given to her to become a talented cricketer as well as the Principal of Nugawela National School for the assistance given to the sports loving students of the School.
