Joseph Vaz SC, Ceylon Electricity Board SC stay unbeaten

Joseph Vaz Sports Club from Group ‘A’ and Ceylon Electricity Board SC from Group ‘B’ have won all three games they have played in the ongoing Galaxy Cup under 25 Volleyball Championship at the Volleyball House, Dadella, Galle. With these victories they also have qualified for semifinals of the Championship. The other two teams to qualify for semis are Sri Lanka Army from group ‘A’ and Sri Lanka Navy from group ‘B’.

The men’s category which commenced on Sunday saw two newcomers to a major championship, United SC and Golden Tigers fighting a tough battle taking the game to its maximum of five sets before Golden Tigers gained the victory 3-2. Though Golden Tigers came up with a brilliant performance they failed to live up to expectations and could not make their way to the semifinal line up.

In Group ‘B’ Ceylon Electricity Board SC dominated winning all three games in a comfortable manner. The two Service teams, Sri Lanka Navy bagged two wins on their way to semifinal, while Sri Lanka Air Force won only a single match in this round which was sufficient for them to proceed further in the championship.

Men’s and women’s semifinals are scheduled to be played at the same venue this Saturday and the play off for third places are scheduled to take place on Sunday at Volleyball House. The both men’s and women’s finals are set to be played at the National Youth Services Council indoor courts Maharagama next weekend.

The Championship is organized by Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and sponsored by Chinese investment firm Boshang Lanka Investment Holdings (Pvt.) has brought in the biggest cash prizes for winners and runner-ups totaling to R. 3.4 million. The organizers are conducting the championship under strict health conditions stipulated due to Covid-19 pandemic.
