Himashini sets up powerlifting record

Himashini Nadeeka Amarasri is a rising star from the district of Kalutara in Powerlifting and weightlifting. She created a record by lifting 42.5 kgs in her maiden competition for women above 40 years in the category of 63 Kgs weight class for Powerlifting Bench Press event.

This achievement had shed rays of hope of future progressive achievements. Himashini was the second child of Lesley Amarasiri, a former Army Officer and Nalani Hettiarachi and was born on August 12, 1980 in Labuduwa, Galle and she was a student of the Southlands College till her advanced level.

She followed her father’s footsteps and excelled in sports at school level and brought in glory to the school at various activities and sports events during her student days. However later in life she became an International school teacher and married Nalaka Udugampala of Panadura and they have a 12 year son named Nandinu Senath Udugampala. Her persistent passion for sports and fitness led her to be a member of the Indika Fitness Centre Panadura and was training herself constantly with the support of the management of the club. Realizing the potential of Himashini the management organized a short term rigorous training through the most renowned Sri Lankan powerlifting and weightlifting coach and Instructor I. P. Nandasena and subsequent to the above training she was able to achieve the record at the event held in Panadura to commemorate the independence day.

Her Instructor Nandasena said that this is the beginning of her achievement and with the potential in Himashini that we could expect a bright future for her at the national level in the future to come.
