Former Captain of St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa, Tharusha Fernando, is determined to represent the country following a successful stint with the Sebastianites Sports Club in the SLC Under-23 Cricket Tournament.

Tharusha first played cricket for St. Sebastian’s Under-13 Team. Recalling his young days he said: “After representing and captaining the Under-13 Team, I went on to play for the Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 Teams.”

“Thereafter, I went on to captain the School Under-17 Team in 2016 and led them to the Division One All-Island Championship title scoring nearly 500 runs with six fifties and claimed a total of 15 wickets. Our head Coach was Imal Boteju.”

His parents influenced him to play cricket and backed him all the way by getting the required cricketing gear.

“Even now they are supporting me with anything, whenever I require any help to continue playing cricket,” said Tharusha.

Tharusha scored his record run-trail in the 2017/18 season as the Captain of St. Sebastian’s in the Inter-School Division One Tournament scoring a total of 1,134 runs with 12 half centuries.

Tharusha also scored 883 runs in the 2016/17 season, inclusive of a brilliant unbeaten double century against D. S. Senanayake College while also claimed a total of 37 wickets with five for 35 as his best bowling.

He also had a very successful 2015/16 season as well when he aggregated 775 runs along with 35 wickets to his credit.

Tharusha also had some overseas experience while representing the County Championship League Tournament in 2018 in England.

“Actually, at Sebastianites SC I scored nearly 400 runs and took close to 20 wickets in the SLC Premier Tournament with an unbeaten 78 against Police CC.”

"Also, I can't forget my achievement in the 2020 Mercantile Cricket Tournament where I guided HNB Finance to the Championship.”

“In the all important final, it was an unforgettable memory for me, because I was named as the Man-of-the-Match," said Tharusha.

“I am really looking forward to representing the national team in all three formats. The day I achieve that feat, honestly I will be a very a happy cricketer,” concluded Tharusha.
