The Management Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to enforce strict guidelines with regard to players' fitness levels with immediate effect with the appointment of Grant Luden as the Physical Performance Manager (PPM), last week.
After various allegations levelled at the player’s fitness with the concluded South African tour, SLC introduced the services of Luden to take care of players' physical capabilities which were at a low profile.
Accordingly, all players contracted under the governing body will have to undergo the SLC stipulated fitness test amidst the new PPM Manager and the National Selectors before being included in to the National Squad. Any player failing to meet the stipulated levels will not be considered for selection. Furthermore, a payment reduction process will be executed as any player who fails to comply with the standard set up by the SLC will be initially stripped off 50 percent of his monthly salary; if he fails to make any improvement, a 100 percent reduction will be imposed until he regains the normalcy.
The players who are on the borderline of the said levels will be eligible for selection under an assurance that they will work hard to revamp and improve to the levels placed by the SLC.
Players who fail to maintain the standards will lose their annual contracts with the SLC.
The present YOYO timing set up by SLC is 18.3 seconds, which is still well below the standards met by other cricket-playing nations.
