Rajeendra Kalugampitiya receives FIDE Trainer Title

FIDE Master Rajeendra Kalugampitiya was awarded the highest chess Trainer title Sri Lanka possess at present, FIDE Trainer by the World Chess Federation after his performance at the Trainers Seminar conducted online by a trainer panel including former World Chess champion, Anatorly Karpov. Rajeendra is the one and only FIDE Trainer in Sri Lanka. Rajeendra was the National Chess Champion in 2016 and obtained the FIDE Master title later by the FIDE.

The Trainer seminar conducted by the FIDE Trainer Commission was sponsored by the Asian Chess Federation in December 2020 and FIDE made the official announcement of awarding the title last week.

Four Sri Lankan trainers participated in the programme where a total of 27 Trainers participated.

FIDE Master Isuru Alahakoon and FIDE Master Prasanna Kurukulasuriya also performed well in the seminar to get the FIDE Instructor titles. Isuru is a four-time National Chess Champion and Prasanna has also represented Sri Lanka in Chess Olympiad.

Akila Kavinda received the National Instructor title. FIDE is awarding five titles for the trainers as Development Instructor (DI), National Instructor (NI), FIDE Instructor (FI), FIDE Trainer (FT) and FIDE Senior Trainer (FST) on the performance of the trainers at the seminars with consideration of their career performances.
