
The inaugural Akuressa Premier Leage (APL) T20 day-night cricket tournament came to a sudden halt as rain started to play havoc on the final day during the match between Super Express team and Super Oriens team at the Balakawala Stadium, Akuressa recently. But the umpires decided to award the champion trophy to Super Express team taking into consideration their good performance at the match. Eight teams took part at the tournament and organizers hope to make it an annual event. Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was the chief guest at the opening ceremony.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa emphasized the importance of sports in order to become a healthy nation. “Team spirit is a vital aspect when we work in society, whether it is in village, regional or National level. Today there are many problems in our country. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, I am happy to see the tournament conducted under health guidelines,” he said.
Athuraliya Pradeshiya Sabha chairman Nihal Silva and former Southern Provincial Councilor B.G. Chandana Priyantha were also present at the award ceremony.
