Nimesh Maduranga an athletic star in the making

Nimesh Maduranga, outstanding Athlete.

Nimesh Maduranga, an outstanding athlete who started his School career at Lunuketiyamadiththa Maha Vidyalaya of Wattegama Education Circuit took a keen interest in athletics from his younger days. As a Grade.five student in the under 11 age category , he won 75 and 200 Metres races and high Jump at the Zonal Meet. He secured the third place in the 100 Metres.event at the Zonal Meet in 2012 and secured the third place again at the same meet in the next year too in the Under 13 age category and his coach was Kumuduni.

Due to his Athletic talent he got an opportunity to get admitted to the Walala A.Ratnayake School which is very popular for sports activities. Nimesh did Athletics under the coaching of Susantha Fernando who instructed him to concentrate on relay events rather than running individually. From the year 2014 he was in the relay team of the School and he was called the Relay running Specialist by his friends. and the members of the team were Nimesh Maduranga, Harsha Sandaruwan, Laksiri Tharumesh and Sithum Viraj and in the same year they secured the third place in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 Relay events at the National Schools Meet.

They secured the second place at the Junior Tarbat Athletic Meet held at Embilipitiya and in 2015 and 2016 A.Ratnayake Maha Vidyalaya secured second place in 4 x 100, 4 x 200 & 4 x 400 Relay events at the Kandy District Sport Meet and Nimesh Maduranga ran the Anchor Lap in the Relay. Again in the year 2016 their Relay team came second in the 4 x 400 Relay event and came third in the 4 x 100 relay event and as usual Nimesh ran the Anchor Lap and in the same year Nimesh and his team secured the second place at the Relay Carnival just behind St.Benedicts Relay team who emerged champions. At the All Island Schools Meet they secured the third place behind St. Benedicts and Maris Stella Relay teams.

Again A.Ratnayake School Relay team came third in the medley Relay event and in the year 2017 Nimesh Maduranga joined Dharmaraja College,Kandy after getting through the G.C.E.(O/L) to pursue higher studies . He was coached in Athletics by Chandana Abeyratne at Dharmaraja and he was included in the Dharmaraja Relay Team with Kavisha, Kalindu, Tharaka, Sachira and Dhammika. The Rajans Relay team with the outstanding Runner, Nimesh Maduranga came a close second in 4 x 100 & 4 x 400 Relay events at the Provincial Athletic Meet in 2018. In the year 2019 the Rajans Relay team secured first place at the Medley Relay event at the Sir Henry Steel Olcott Relay Carnival and Nimesh won the 66th 10 KilometreAnnual Road Race in 2019 for the Major General.

Nalin Angammana Memorial Trophy conducted by Dharmaraja College, Nimesh Maduranga got through the G.C.E.(A/L)in the Commerce stream in the same year and is awaiting admission to the University
