Kandy District Cricket Association will conduct an on line seminar for persons who are interested to become umpires and scorers in the Kandy District. This is a good idea as there is a dearth of umpires and scorers in the hill capital, and also an opportunity for anyone interested in taking up this profession. This is a good opportunity for more umpires and scorers to complete the course prior to getting back on the field . At present they are having seminars online for young schoolboys.
Umpiring is a profession that a lot of people don’t appreciate. you have to be mentally tough; have the ability to deal with conflict; and the ability to empathize and relate to people of different backgrounds, cultures and personalities. None of those are related to decision-making, but there are a lot of skills which are important to be a good match official.
Over the years, respect from the players for umpires has increased Players have always appreciated that umpiring is a difficult job. Whenever anyone asks a cricketer whether they would like to give umpiring a go, the vast majority of them would say: “Why in the world would I do that? You’ve got to be joking! One has to stand in the sun for six to seven hours to do what you guys do.” There is a lot of respect for this profession.
