
Kalana Thushan Tennakoon, an Old Boy of Dharmaraja College,Kandy is a Karateka who learnt the sport at the age of eight years from his father Vipula Jayanath Tennakoon who is a Karate Black Belt Dan one. Kalana participated at a Karate competition for the first time at the Central Province Karate Championship and was the Runner-up in the Under 13 Kumite. At the all Island Karate Championship again he was the Kumite Runner-up in the year 2013 and was selected to the Sri Lanka Schools team.
From 2013 to 2015 he won the Kumite event at the All Island Karate Competition in Under 14, Under 15 and Under 16 age groups. In the year these competitions were held at Torrington Weightlifting Centre and Sugathadasa Weightlifting Centre and in the same year he competed at the South Asian Games unsuccessfully. Kalana was the Vice Captain of the College Karate team from 2014 to 2015 and Captain of the team in 2019. His karate Coach at Dharmaraja College was Saman Weerasinghe.
At the World Karate championship held in Indonesia he was placed 15th in the World Ranking in the 92 Kg. Weight class out of 350 competitors from 200 countries and it was the first time a Sri Lankan achieved this feat.
In 2016 Kalana got through the G.C.E.(O/L) exam and received a Scholarship from Dimension School in Singapore which is conducting lectures for Management Courses and he followed a Three Year Management Course.
While Kalana was doing this Course in Singapore as a Black Belt Dan One he coached Karate to children in Singapore in the age category of 10 to 14 years.
After completing the Course successfully, he returned to Sri Lanka in 2019 and started coaching Karate to children who were interested in the game while participating in Karate Competitions organized by the Armed forces, namely Army, Navy, Air Force and Police and was placed second to the Navy competitor in the 83 Kg. Weight class.
Kalana became Karate Black Belt Dan One in 2016 and Black Belt Dan Two in 2019.
As a Six footer, Kalana is very popular among children as he is an outstanding Karate Instructor and he is thankful to his father and the Karate coach of Dharmaraja College, for the support given to him.
