Dasun Sathsara - karateka par excellence

National Karateka, Gold Medalist, Athlete, Cricketer and Elle Player Dasun Sathsara has brought honour and glory to his Alma Mater Sandalankawa Central College. Dasun was admitted to Junior School Napokuna, Katugampola in 2006 and his first class teacher was Mrs. Anusha and at the Inter House Sports Meet he did Long Jump and emerged champion and went up to the Provincial Level.

His father Ex-Army Karate Coach Sugath Kumara taught him the basics of Karate at the age of five and from there Dasun shifted to Sandalankawa Central College.

In 2012 as an under 11 competitor. he was placed second in the Provincial Meet and in the same year participating in the National Schools Karate Championship he came second and in 2015 in the under 14/15 age group in the Sri Lanka National Schools Meet he came first in Kata and second in the Schools Tournament.

He won the Black Belt in 2015 and in Sri Lanka Schools Meet he came to the Best Eight in Kumite under 15 age group and in 2016 in the under 57 lbs in the Karate Federation Meet he came first and third in the Nationals and in the All Island under 16 Ministry of Sports Provincial Meet he came first and came to the Best Eight too.

In 2017 he came first in Kumite at the Provincial Meet under 18 age group and at the Nationals he won a Gold Medal in Kumite in the under 67 lbs Category. He was selected to the National Pool to the Asian Tour for Kumite in 2018. In the North Western Provincial Meet he was third in

Kumite and in the All Island Meet under 18 age group he was second in Kumite and in the same year in the under 17 under 68 kgs Wayamba Meet he came first in Kumite and took part in the Sri Lanka National Championship.

With these performances under his belt he was selected as the under 16/17 age group Captain of the Karate contingent for the International Shimogo Open Championship in Bangalore, India and he participated as a Black Belt in Kumite and won a Gold Medal. It was a very fine exposure for him.

In 2019 North Western Provincial Meet he came first in the under 20 age group in Kumite and in the Ministry of Education Meet in the under 20 age group he was placed third and in the North Western Karate Association Junior Meet under 67 kgs he won a Gold Medal and was awarded school colours for Karate.

In addition he played cricket and captained the under 13 team and in the following year played for the under 15 team and in 2017 for the under 17 team and in 2019 they were the Divisional Champions and under 20 Zonal Champions.

As a member of the Elle Team in 2019 they were the second Runner Up in Divisional and they were selected for the Best Eight teams at Provincial Level and he was the school Games Captain too.

He is well supported by the Principal Asanka Chaminda and the school authorities.
