New Sports Act to be enacted

The Minister of Youth and Sports Namal Rajapaksa and Justice Minister Ali Sabry had a successful discussion at the Justice Ministry on Thursday pertaining to amending the sports Act No 25 of 1973 and the need to enact a new Act.

When the sports Minister has assumed duties first at the Sports Ministry last month he pointed out about the importance of amending the sports Act. The present sports Act was introduced in 1973 and it needs a huge change. It has been amended four times but more changes are needed to meet modern-day requirements.

Meanwhile, during the discussion between Sports and Justice Ministers, an agreement has been reached to legislate the new amendment within six months.

In addition, Sports Ministry officials are required to give their recommendation within the first month of process.

A committee consisting of officers of the Ministries of Justice and Sports and also the Attorney General’s Department and the Legal Draftsman’s Department have been appointed for this purpose. The Committee is also required to compile the draft bill within two months. According the draft bill will be submitted to the Cabinet of Ministers for approval.

The Secretary of the Justice Ministry Priyantha Mayadunna, Secretary of the Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry Anuradha Wijekoon, Member of the National Sports Council Kumar Sangakkara, and senior officials of the Attorney General’s Department, Justice and Sports Ministries also participated at this discussion held at the Justice Ministry.
