Irushka Thimira Gaminda a cricketing star in the making

Third year first eleven player, right hand opening batsman, left arm leg spinner and safe fielder Irushka Thimira Gaminda brought honour to his Alma Mater Devapathiraja National School, Ratgama.

Irushka commenced his schooling at Siri Sumana Primary School, Ratgama and there is no sports activities but Thimira played soft ball cricket with his neighbouring friends. When he was in Grade Five his school arranged a Big Match with Jayanthi Primary School and he was selected at the eleventh hour but he could not play in that match. He was admitted to Grade Six of Devapathiraja Vidyalaya and the Principal and Master in Charge of cricket were M. L. P. Alwis and Mr. Nishantha. No sooner he came under his present coach Ranjan de Silva and got selected for the under 13 team. He performed well for under 13 team and in his second year he took a hat trick versus Mahinda College, Galle and in the same year in 2017 he was promoted to the first eleven team and he was the “Baby of the Team” for two successive years.

As an under 15 player in 2018 he claimed 36 wickets and in his second year too he captured 36 wickets and scored 320 runs. He went on to captain the under 15 Galle District team in Prima Cup and in the Provincial Tournaments too. As an under 15 player in his first year in the first eleven he bagged 19 wickets and in the following year he claimed 40 wickets with two five wicket hauls and in 2019/20 he captured 56 wickets with two ten wicket hauls and 5 five wicket hauls. Also as an opener he collected 180 runs.

As an under 19 player at the age of 15 years so far in three seasons he has claimed 115 wickets and he has three more years to represent his Alma Mater.

He played in two Big matches against their arch rivals Madampagama Vidyalaya and they play their one day match against Gintota Vidyalaya and played in that match too. For his success he is receiving all the support from his new Principal Sam de Silva and Master in Charge of Cricket Mr. Kumbulathara.

With these performances under his belt he was selected for the under 19 Development Squad and out of 80 players through out the Island he was selected for the 30 member pool for a team which is preparing for the next under 19 world cup.
