Unseeded Savit stuns Sankha in Men’s Singles semis

Unseeded Savit Weerasinghe delivered a stunning blow to reach the final of the Men’s Open Singles final on day seven of the Clay Court Tennis Nationals, which continued at the SLTA Courts in Green Path, Colombo yesterday.

The unfancied Weerasinghe rallied around magnificently to beat the more experienced third seed Sankha Atukorale 7-5, 6-3 in a spectacular manner.

The Men’s Singles second semi-final also produced an upset as the seventh seed Yasitha de Silva had the better of the fifth seed Thehan Wijemanne 7-6, 6-2 in style.

Meanwhile, teenage sensation Savini Jayasuriya continued her outstanding performance while putting herself in contention for a unique triple crown.

The 17-year-old schoolgirl from Bishop’s College, Colombo who has already qualified for the semi-finals of the Women’s Open Singles, went on to reach the last four of the Women’s Doubles and Girls’ Under-18 Singles as well.

In the Women’s Doubles quarter-finals, she joined her partner Janali Manamperi and defeated the pair of Dewmini Warnasuriya and Shenali Warnasuriya in straight sets 6-0, 6-1.

Their opponents in the semi-finals would be the top seeds Alana Seneviratne and Anika

Seneviratne who had received a bye from the quarter-finals.

Savini also proved her dominance in the Girls’Under-18 Singles, as the bottom seed powered her way into a resounding 6-3, 6-1 win over the sixth seed Sethmi Sumanaweera in the quarter-finals.

In another quarter-final fixture of the Girls’Under-18 Singles, fifth seed Oneli Perera toppled the third seed Alana Seneviratne in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
