
The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka(AASL) will be called ‘Sri Lanka Athletics’ in future as the membership gave a clear mandate to change the name at its Annual General Meeting held on Saturday . This is to allow the body responsible for the sport of track and field to be run in a more professional manner in the future. The athletics controlling body was established in 1922 and it is one of the most long standing controlling bodies in Sri Lanka .
Meanwhile the General committee of Sri Lanka Athletics felicitated Major General Palitha Fernando, the President of Sri Lanka Athletics who wasnewly appointed Secretary to the Ministry of Wild life and reforestation on this occasion.
Major General Fernando was elected President of the AASL in 2018 and his four-year term would end on May 31, 2022..During his period Sri Lankan athletes obtained successful results at the International level . Especially during the last South Asian Games the highest number of 15 gold medals were won by Sri Lankan Athletes while junior athletes also excelled under the present administrative committee headed by Athletic Chief Major General Palitha Fernando. Meanwhile Sri Lanka Athletics already commenced their National pool training to focus on future International events and athletes have a busy schedule in 2021 with most of the Asian meets .They already have finalised the dates for the National trials on 23to 25 th October at the Sugathadasa Stadium followed by National Athletic Championships which will be held on December 5 and 6
The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Athletics Prema Pinnawala and the executive members of the Sri Lanka Athletics and affiliates clubs members of the Athletics graced the occasion and they discussed their future plans of the Sri Lanka Athletics .
