Mercantile All Island Age Group Badminton championship finals today

Thiseja Herath of Museaus College won a three-setter against Hiruni Dias of Lyceum International, Panadura in their girls under 13 semi final of the Mercantile All Island Age Badminton championships at the Mercantile Badminton Indoor stadium, Colombo 7 yesterday.

Thiseja won the first set 15/13 but Hiruni bounced back to take the second 15/7. However, Thiseja fought back strongly to win the third set 15/6 to enter the final which is scheduled to be played today.

In the other semifinal, Ramuni Suhasnie of Musesus beat her school mate Sanuki Suraweera in straight sets 15/13, 15/10.

Meanwhile, in the boys under 13 semifinals, Lasal Ranaweera of Nalanda defeated Dharmapala Pannipitiya shuttler Minuka Miniiwara 15/5, 15/9 to enter the final. He will meet Dharmasoka, Ambalangoda’s Akindu Jayatillake who beat Yasith Vimuka de Silva of Isipatana in straight sets 15/10, 15/10.

In the under 11 girls semifinals, top seed Netmi Amaya eased past Situli Ranasinghe 15/8, 15/8 while Isuri Bhagya beat Slitumi de Silva easily 15/3, 15/1 in the other semifinal.

Pamudu Pankaja beat Samiru Harsaka 15/11, 15/11 to enter the boys under 11 final. He will meet Evan Joshua who beat Sehas Perera 16/14, 15/11.

This tournament is conducted by the Mercantile Badminton Association for the first time. It is a success with more than 600 players in the age groups under 11, 13, 15, both singles and doubles taking part. In addition, there are open men and women singles and doubles events and mixed doubles in the under 35, 45, 55 and 65 age group categories. All participates will receive certificates and the semifinalists onwards will receive gifts from the tournament sponsors Flex sportswear Pvt Ltd, Rivival and Li-Nine. Flex sportswear Managing Director Sunjeewa Akuretiya will be the chief guest while Rivival Director Rajini Jayatilleka will be the guest of honour at the awards ceremony on Sunday.
