Malays to make debut at Inter-Club Sevens

Colombo Malay Cricket Club (CMCC) will make their foray into the big league when they make their debut at the Dialog Inter-Club Seven 2019 Segment One to be held on June 28 and 29 at the CR and FC grounds.

CMCC rugby team created history when they competed in the Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) ‘C’ this season and remaining unbeaten after playing five matches. They are not newcomers to Sevens rugby having participated in the development grade, at the Open Sevens tournament conducted by the Western Province Rugby Football Union last year, with the debutants captained by

Imran Alibah emerging Plate runners-up.

Coached by a former Kandy and Sri Lanka international Amjad Buksh and captained by old Peterite Pooji Malavige, CMCC have been drawn in group D with Police SC ‘A’, Army SC ‘A’ and Navy SC ‘B’ in the 16-team competition.

The tri-Services, Police and CH and FC are fielding two teams each in this tournament which will be held over one leg instead of two as previously scheduled.

Group A comprises CH and FC ‘A’, Havelocks SC, Army SC ‘B’ and Petersons RFC.

Group B consists of Air Force ‘A’, CR and FC, Police SC ‘B’ and Galle RFC. Navy SC ‘A’, defending champions Kandy SC, CH and FC ‘B’ and Air Force ‘B’ are in the group B.

The pool matches will begin at 9.20 a.m. on the first day with the knockout rounds starting at 9.00 a.m. on Sunday.

The women’s Sevens national pool will be dividing into four teams and play two matches during the interval.
