Kandy SC primed for Dialog Rugby Club 7’s

This time the Kandy SC rugby sevens team is emerging as a powerhouse. The team is on a mission to stay on top at this year’s 16-team Sevens tournament which will be played today and tomorrow from 9.00 am at the Racecourse grounds.

Kandy SC are drawn in group C and will play CH & FC B at 11 am, Air Force B at 2 pm and Navy A at 5 pm. Kandy SC are going into every game confident of winning. They have the best sevens players in the country. Kandy SC will be looking to close for another podium finish this weekend.

Coach Fazil Marija is all out to get his side to produce something exciting and special this weekend. Kandy SC has the most experienced squad. Captain Nigel Ratwatte is excited about the upcoming tournament. Some of the players in action will be Danushka Dayan, Roshan Weerarthne, Kavindu Perera, Nigel Ratwatte, Danushka Ranjan, Jayson Dissanayake Sanja Bandara,Anuradha Wilware, and Thilina Wijesinghe.

Kandy Club’s 142nd AGM

Today at 7 pm the AGM of the Kandy Club established in 1877 and where every member is a shareholder of the club, will be held. This year the same committee will continue, with only one change. They are: President - D. Swarnasinghe, Vice President - R. Jayathilake, Secretary - R.A.F. McLeod, Treasurer - L.B.M. Herath, Asst. Treasurer - A. Vidanagamage, Immediate Past President - K.M.R. Kulatunge, Committee: B.D.R. Rajan, P. Pethiyagoda, A. Jayaratne, R. Nanayakkara, R. de Saram, T. Jayasinghe, V. Athimoolam, R. Gnanaraj, W.W. Bandara; General Manager - R. Tarinda for KSC next season?

Tarinda Ratwatte, son of Ashan Ratwatte, who led Kandy Sports Club in 1986,has reportedly crossed over from CR and FC to his hometown club. The talk of the town is will he play for his father’s first club Kandy SC. Fly-half Tarinda captained Trinity College and went on to lead the Sri Lanka National under 19 team at the Junior Rugby Asiad. He also had the honour of representing Sri Lanka in both Sevens and XVs. If he joins Kandy SC, he will take over the fly half’s position and his cousin Nigel Ratwatte, will shift to centre.

Trinity vs Wesley

Seventh-placed Trinity who beat S. Thomas’ last week will meet sixth-placed Wesley who lost to Science at Sugathadasa Stadium today in an inter-school league Cup match. In the last year's game played at Pallekelle, Trinity won 21–11.

Whither William Weerasinghe trophy?

The talk among the rugby lovers is when will be the William Weerasinghe trophy rugby game played this year between Dharmarja and Kingswood? It was in 2001 in appreciation of the services rendered by William Weerasinghe to the Rajans rugger, the Rugby Football Association of the Old Rajans decided to play for this trophy.

Nipuna crosses to Randle hills

St. Anthony’s College under 13 coach Nipuna Ratnayake, a top cricketer and junior coach, has joined Kingswood College. He will be handling the under 13 side.

Seven schools from Kandy for U-18 hockey

Seven schools from Kandy, Vidyartha, St. Anthony’s, Dharmaraja and St.Sylvester’s (boys) and Seethadevi, Mahamaya and Warnamalu (girls) are in action at the Under 18 All island boys and girls hockey tournament in Anuradhapura. The tournament ends on Sunday.

Trinity U 17 unbeaten

Trinity College under 17 cricket side have pocketed three wins in the Singer Trophy U-17 division I inter-school cricket tournament. They have beaten St. Anthony’s, Kingswood and St. Thomas’, Matale. The players who did well are Ranuda Somaratne, who made 102 against the Antonians, Theeraka Ranathunga, Mathisha Pathirana, Akram Muthalif, Abishek Anadakumar, Umair Raizan, T. Amarasinghe, and T. Ranatunge to name a few.

Baseball

Baseball is catching up fast and some of the schools are keen to promote it. Kandy is awaiting the support promised by the new baseball officials. In 2010, Ranabima, Kandy led by L.S. Mannauthum emerged champions at the Inter-District knock-out baseball competition organized by the Sri Lanka Baseball Association.

In the run-up to the final, Ranabima Kandy overcame Maroons SC and Mahinda SC. The champion Ranabima Kandy team consisted of L.S. Mannauthum (captain), D.A.C. Wijewantha, S.U. Jayaratne, T.U. Gammanpila, S.C. Abeysuriya, C.J.B. Ranasingha, S.L. Kulathunga, D.D. Chandrasiri, C.K. Hapuarachchi, S. Perusana, C.P. Jayasiri, S.D. Ananda, S.Dishan, L.A.D. Piyadarshana, C.N.B. Nugahapola and H.R.S. Padeniya.

Two Plate rugby games

Two Plate inter-school rugby games will be played over here in the hills. At Nittawela, a rousing game is on the cards when top two teams in the Plate, St. Anthony’s and Kingswood clash at 4 pm while at Pallekelle, Vidyartha face Sri Sumangala.

Radika takes over as Army rugby coach

Radika Hettiarchchi, a Kandy product has taken over the Army 7’s rugby team as coach and today his guidance should provide good results at the Sevens. A product of Dharmaraja College, he played for Kandy SC and donned the national 7’s and XVs jersey. He guided Dharmaraja to be unbeaten league rugby champions. He was also in Nepal as their head coach.

Hasitha in the 4-day squad

Trinity College cricketer, Hasitha Boyagoda, a Sri Lanka Under-19 cricketer and record breaker, is in the Sri Lanka four-day squad to South Africa to participate in a month-long tour for the tri-series and two 4-day fixtures.

Hasitha Rajeendra Bandara Boyagoda is one of Trinity College’s most successful cricket captains who won the school's highest award, the Ryde Gold Medal in the year 2017. He is a fine all-rounder, bats right hand and bowls off spin. He represented Sri Lanka under 19 team on the tour to Australia in 2017 where he was the vice-captain. He has represented Sri Lanka under 19 teams on six occasions and also toured South Africa.

Anil to guide referees

Kandy’s Anil Jayasinghe is all out to give rugby refereeing his best. He led Vidyartha College in rugby and captained Kandy SC when this writer was the team manager. At present he is Referees Manager, World Rugby Educator and Asian Rugby Football coach of match officials.

Lanka Plate billiards

This time the Kandy District Lanka Plate Billiards Tournament was cued in a bad way, with only eight entries - four each from Mahanuwara YMBA and Mawanella RC. The first round games were played at Mahanuwara YMBA table and all four Kandy cueists lost and the Mawanella cueists were the winners. The semis and the finals were played at Mawanella Recreation Club and all four semifinals were from Mawanella. M. M. M. Ramzi (Mawanella RC) beat A.

S. M. Anfas (Mawanella RC) (161/147), Ranjan Ranatunga (Mawanella RC) beat M. S. M. Thamzil (Mawanella RC) (189/109) in the semifinals and in the final Ranjan Ranatunga (Mawanella RC) beat M. M. M. Ramzi (Mawanella RC) (335/154).

This cueing was a qualifier to select the two finalists to play in the All-Island Championship which is the final qualifying tournament to select the players who would contest at the forthcoming National Billiards Championship.
