Sri Lanka cricket selectors included inform Test opener Dimuth Karunaratne in the squad to play South Africa in a one-day warm-up match at the P Sara Oval on Thursday (July 26).
The left-handed Karunaratne who has never been a regular member of the one-day team in recent times although he has appeared in 17 ODIs has been rewarded for his current form where he emerged as the leading runs scorer in the two-Test series with 386 at an average of 118.66.
“He is in good form so we thought we will try him out in the one-day format. You never know he might score runs which would strengthen our batting in the one-day team,” said chief selector Graeme Labrooy. “He is mature enough to switch over to playing Test and one-day cricket.”
Labrooy also said that they had included spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Nishan Peiris both of whom have performed well with the Sri Lanka ‘A’ team.
Sri Lanka top order batsman Dhananjaya de Silva will lead the team. This is South Africa’s only warm-up game before they commence a five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka at Dambulla on Sunday.
SRI LANKA BOARD XI: Dhananjaya de Silva (captain), Dimuth Karunaratne, Dasun Shanaka, Shehan Jayasuriya, Asela Gunaratne, Minod Bhanuka, Isuru Udana, Prabath Jayasuriya, Asitha Fernando, Binura Fernando, Nishan Peris.
Standys: Lahiru Milantha, Lasith Ambuldeniya, Shehan Madushanka.
