TWICKENHAM, Saturday – England and New Zealand both enjoyed an unbeaten first day of the season-ending London Sevens at Twickenham on Saturday.

They each made it into the quarter-finals on the back of three wins each but neither side can catch overall champions South Africa after the Blitzboks wrapped up the World Rugby Sevens Series title in Paris last week. Saturday saw South Africa beaten 24-12 by the United States in their final pool match but both teams made it through to Sunday's quarter-finals.

But for the first time in three years, Olympic sevens champions Fiji failed to make it through to the last eight, losing to Canada in the first game of the day before being beaten by New Zealand.

However, Fiji's 61-5 pool thrashing of Japan, the hosts of the 2019 15-a-side World Cup, meant the Japanese were relegated will not be one of the 15 core nations in next year's series. Sunday's quarter-finals will see the United States up against Australia, New Zealand playing Scotland, England taking on South Africa and a clash between Argentina and Canada
